Metastatic cells will take any help they can get.
Two recent papers in Cancer Cell (Lu et al., this issue of Cancer Cell, and Kang et al.) illustrate means whereby acquisition of VCAM-1 by tumor cells can promote metastasis. First, monocyte/macrophages expressing α4 integrin bind VCAM-1 and provide survival signals enhancing establishment of metastases. Second, VCAM-1 allows dormant tumor cells to interact with osteoclasts, yielding paracrine ...
متن کاملCan ISPs Take the Heat from Overlay Networks?
ISPs manage performance of their networks in the presence of failures or congestion by employing common traffic engineering techniques such as link weight settings, load balancing and routing policies. Overlay networks attempt to take control over routing in the hope that they might achieve better performance for such failures or high load episodes. In this paper, we examine some of the interac...
متن کاملTake a TRP to beat the heat.
Temperature is a ubiquitous physical variable with a profound impact on living organisms. Obviously, because of its detrimental effects on cellular biochemistry and integrity, extreme temperature must be detected and avoided. Even subtle differences in environmental temperature, however, can provide valuable information regarding the presence of food, companions, predators, or just a cozy place...
متن کاملClimate change: who will take the heat
Climate change policies can regulate greenhouse gases (GHG) at a variety of points in the product cycle of fossil fuels: from fossil fuel suppliers based on the carbon content of extracted fossil resource to nal emitters at the point of energy generation. This paper develops a general equilibrium model with trade between fossil resource abundant countries and capital abundant countries to show ...
متن کاملGlycine Transporters Not Only Take Out the Garbage, They Recycle
Two articles in the current issue of Neuron examine the consequences of deleting the two genes that encode glycine transporters. Interestingly, loss of glial transporters enhances while loss of presynaptic neuronal transporters reduces glycinergic transmission. These two opposing phenotypes resemble distinct human diseases characterized by dysfunction in glycinergic signaling.
